PHILOSOPHY
OF CARE
Hospice
of Harnett County, Inc. provides comfort-oriented care,
with emphasis on the relief of physical symptoms, to
patients of all ages who have been diagnosed with a
life-threatening illness with a limited life expectancy.
Hospice
encompasses total care of the patient and family,
striving to meet their needs, not only physically, but
also emotionally and spiritually. Hospice also attempts to maintain patient autonomy and family
involvement, keeping the patient in his or her own home
when possible.
The
strength of our hospice program lies in its interdisciplinary
team approach to the care of both patient and family.
This team includes the physician, nurse, social worker,
home health aide, volunteer, clergy and other special
services.
As
an integral part of this team, volunteers add
valuable skills and lend unique talents to the
program. In this way, each volunteer helps to provide
needed support and the best possible care to patients
and families.
APPLICATIONS
Those
interested in becoming a Hospice volunteer must submit
an application. All direct patient/family volunteers
attend mandatory training sessions that discuss the
philosophy of hospice, how hospice operates, infection
control, communication skills and grief loss issues.
VOLUNTEER
AREAS
Hospice
volunteers are vital to our program. Every member
brings a unique
combination
of interests, skills and talents to contribute to the hospice
program, and each plays a unique an important role.
Maybe one of the volunteer roles listed below is
tailor-made just for you.
Home
Care - patient care volunteers become involved
with daily lives of patients and their families.
Volunteers may sit with a patient so the primary
caregiver can accomplish the daily tasks of shopping
or banking, or offer other gentle support in an effort
to celebrate a holiday. Their simple presence or
caring touch can do more for a family than a thousand
profound words. Their special sharing requires active
listening skills and non-judgmental reflection of the
feelings being shared. With professional confidentiality
the patient care volunteer accompanies family members
on their journey, sometimes together, sometimes separately,
week to week, second to second. It can be the most
rewarding work you have ever done.
Bereavement
- Work under supervision of the Bereavement
Coordinator contacting the patient's family to offer
support during the year following the death of their
loved one.
Clerical
Work, Fund Raising and Special Assignments - On
the job training is provided. These volunteers may
attend the patient care training program but are not
required to do so.
Speakers
Bureau - Inform people in the community about the
services of Hospice of Harnett County, Inc. And
represent hospice at community events.

of us are born for a reason, but all of us don't
discover why. Success in life has nothing to do
with what you gain in life or accomplish for yourself.
It's what you do for others."
