When
is the right time to seek hospice care?
At
any time during a life-limiting illness, it is
appropriate to discuss all of a patient’s
options, including hospice services. The sooner Hospice of
Harnett County team can begin to help the patient
and family, the more effective the services will be in
improving the quality of life and reducing the physical,
emotional and financial burdens.
Usually
one is introduced into hospice care through a family
doctor or loved one, however, referrals are accepted
from any source. Once our hospice has received a
physician's order for hospice evaluation, our hospice
nurse and admission staff will pay a visit to
assess the needs of the patient and family. |

When
is the right time to ask about hospice?
Now
is the best time to learn more about hospice care and
ask questions about what to expect. Although
end-of-life care may be difficult to discuss, it is best
for family members to share their wishes
long
before it becomes a concern.
This can greatly reduce stress when the time for hospice
becomes apparent. By having these discussions in
advance, patients are not forced into uncomfortable
situations. Instead, they can make an educated
decision that includes the advice and input of loved
ones. |
